The Time Traveler’s Guide to Medieval England: A Handbook for Visitors to the Fourteenth Century by Ian Mortimer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
“If we really want to understand what humanity is, and how adaptable we are, we must see ourselves as a constantly living, evolving race—always on the very cusp of a vast and unimaginable future, whether we live in the fourteenth century or the twenty-first—and in no way dead until the whitened bones of the last human being lie abandoned on the sand.”
Accessible. Informative. Funny. Compassionate. Words I never would have used to describe a non-fiction book of medieval history. But Mortimer has struck a perfect balance here, with plenty of research delivered in an easy to digest, well-laid-out fashion.
The best recommendation I can give you is this: I plan to read ALL of Mortimer’s books in this series, whether they’re from a period I’m interested in or not.
